Eyes bigger than your stomach?
Hello readers, today we're going to take a turn to a more pressing matter, obesity.
In today's society obesity has skyrocketed immensely to never before seen numbers in the young community. Unfortunately the focus is on ages 6-19 because these are the people that eat unhealthy food the most and are struggling with weight conditions. Is fast food the new tobacco? I would say this is a question where I can see the cons and the negative pros of why people eat fast food so much. Once in a blue moon craving for fast food never kills anyone but when it comes to resorting to this outlet of fast food such as McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, etc... It can lead to horrible consequences. Take the film "Super Size Me '' for example, you can view for yourself the devastating effects it took on the filmmaker's body.
However some people may not be able to afford a home cooked healthy meal at home, that's when fast food becomes their only option as something to eat. When one knows what's good for them they'll know their body doesn't want the grease after eating it constantly but they believe that it's better than having no meal at all. The opposite of using fast food as a last resort would be willing and happily eating fast food instead of choosing a better way of life. That is when fast food became the new tobacco. Some people mentally can't eat anything other than fried greasy food because that's what they enjoy, which unfortunately is what leads us to today's world as we know it.
Author Radley Balko touches on a very important topic about the medical expense view on obesity he states, "we'll all make better choices about diet, exercise, and personal health when someone else isn't paying for it." (Balko 398). I completely agree with the author on this one, society feels like it's okay to feed themselves unhealthy foods on a regular basis because there's always "someone" there for them to fall back on, health care. If the process of healthcare were different and people were responsible for their own healthcare in some way people would think twice on putting themselves in the hospital.
Another author I wanted to commemorate was David Zinczenko, he proposes the question, "shouldn't we know better than to eat two meals a day in fast food restaurants?" (Zinczenko 392). Yes we should know what to and not to eat when it comes to unhealthy meals but doubling back to what I mentioned before sometimes that's all one has to go off on and it's a horrible way to fuel the body. making oneself responsible for their own healthcare could also be a negative for those who only have McDonalds for lunch and dinner. This is because it technically wouldn't be their fault as to why they have the medical bills but one who has all the resources to eat healthy shouldn't complain about the consequences of their own actions.
Well done. Do not forget you had to include the documentary and Michelle Obama's remarks.
