Decision vs. fate

Hello readers, another topic for you today, today's discussion will be on whether or not we are products of our environment or products of our expectations. To be a product of an environment to me means to have one's decisions influenced by the type of lifestyle they chose because that's what they group up around and believe it was their only option. Or the people they hang around with influence them and their decisions whether it's negative or positive. For example two different families are presented, one in a lower class environment where crime is known to occur and the living situations and income isn’t the greatest. And the other a higher classed family, not too high to where they are in a mansion but they are living comfortably to the point their only worries in life is what vacation they are going to be going on each year. Not having to worry about whose child got injured while playing outside in the streets innocently or while rummaging through the mail, they hope to not see any past due bills. The product of the child from the lower class environment decisions may be completely different than the higher classed child because they are experiencing different struggles. Child A may be working two jobs because they need to help pay the bills meanwhile child B doesn’t have a job because everything is taken care of for them.

Child A may not be able to go outside at certain times because of the crime rate meanwhile child B does not have a curfew. This is to be a product of our environment. Our day to day life is influenced by the things that surround us, the situations that we are used to. To be a product of our expectations is to go against the idea of being a product of one's environment. Meaning even though there are certain things around you that influence you, you don't let those elements control you. Only what you want to see happen for yourself can influence your decisions. For example Child A really wants to finish out college so that he can get him and his family better living conditions but the bills of his households are worrying him and making him want to quit so he can contribute to money. Instead of giving in he decides to continue working for his diploma and looking at the bigger picture of what his life can turn into. Child B even though they have everything set and stone for them and don't have to lift a finger they could still decide to get a job and work for the things they want in life. It’s all about how badly a person wants something, would they rather succumb to their environment and take the easy route or would they rather satisfy the expectations they have set for themselves. It is possible to be products of both but it is not possible to be products of both at the same time.

  1. Hello!
Great post. I love how you included different scenarios that a child can be exposed to and how this can affect how they view the world when they grow up. I believe that we are products of our environment as well as the expectations that are set for us (or expectations we set for ourselves) but overall, environment has so much to do with how we grow up. Like you mentioned, crime, financial issues, and living conditions greatly impact us.
