Mentors

In the novel “The other Wes Moore” he gives credit to those who have helped shape him into the man he is today. When it comes to a person growing up it's helpful to have someone on your side to guide you along the way. Showing you the ropes, advising you right from wrong, and just being there if you need to be heard out. Unfortunately Wes was a bit deprived of that because he lost his father at a young age. He still had his mother but for a kid to lose their father at a time he did and how highly he looked up to him it really threw him off his game. Personally I could vouch for needing someone in my life to guide me. If I didn’t have my mother I don't know what I would do, she pushes me to be the best person I can be even when I feel like giving up. For example with college as I near my last year as a college student the pressure becomes greater and sometimes I question myself whether this is all worth it. When I do she's always right there to keep me pushing through it. ...

Hard news

In the novel “The Other Wes Moore” the character Wes Moore that ended up in prison explains everything he has been through from his childhood to adulthood so far and it seems that it has always been a bit crazy. One important detail I've learned so far that has been revealed to me is that at a young age Wes conceived a child with a girl named Alicia he met on the school bus. They started out as friends but their relationship quickly progressed to more. He  confided in his brother about his predicament since he also had a baby on the way but unfortunately his brother spilled the beans to their mother at a family dinner with the mother of his child present at the event. His mother was devastated to hear the news because she could slowly see her second son turning into her first. Young, unprepared, and unfocused on the bright future she wanted for him. She asked the new coming mom if this was true and she confirmed, unsure on how to accept the news, Wes's mo...

Working hard

Welcome all, today we are going to take a different approach to our conversion and get more personal. I am currently reading a book called “The Other Wes Moore” and one of  the characters in the story explains how they use basketball as a scapegoat from their rough reality. I can honestly say that I also am known to find ways to escape or occupy myself or my thoughts for that matter when I have a lot going on in my life. I was never the type of person to adapt to hobbies. I’m not much of a reader, I can't draw and I don't paint or anything like that but I was able to find something to keep my mind off of my troubles.   For example I’ve always thought about going to the gym and better myself but I never had the motivation. However, I found that during my days I would get lonely and begin to feel depressed because I didn't have enough around me to keep my spirits up. So instead of wallowing in my depression I decided to finally buy a gym membership and begin my fitness jou...

Decision vs. fate

Image
Hello readers, another topic for you today, today's discussion will be on whether or not we are products of our environment or products of our expectations. To be a product of an environment to me means to have one's decisions influenced by the type of lifestyle they chose because that's what they group up around and believe it was their only option. Or the people they hang around with influence them and their decisions whether it's negative or positive. For example two different families are presented, one in a lower class environment where crime is known to occur and the living situations and income isn’t the greatest. And the other a higher classed family, not too high to where they are in a mansion but they are living comfortably to the point their only worries in life is what vacation they are going to be going on each year. Not having to worry about whose child got injured while playing outside in the streets innocently or while rummaging through the mail, they h...
